Luxury Mediterranean Break Summary 3June 2010 – March 2011

Those seeking a refreshing mini-vacation can take advantage of a carefully planned short break, surrounded by the clear waters of the Mediterranean. Lap up the culture the Islands of Malta have to offer, while you enjoy six nights in a luxury suite, exquisite Mediterranean cuisine, a day of Spa pampering and 5 star service followed by a day on board a luxurious sailing yacht.

A tour of Valletta, entirely inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will give you insight into ‘a City built by Gentlemen for Gentlemen’, where you can admire Michaelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio’s largest and only signed work of art, while an art historian gives you an expert angle on the painting and the mysterious man who created it.

Experience the Medieval city of Mdina, and the lifestyle of a noble art collector, with a private guided tour of Palazzo Falson – a medieval palace-museum, once a nobleman’s home.

Enjoy an exclusive and unique tour of the Grand Harbour on the same Daghjsa (traditional Maltese Rowing Boat) which was used exclusively by Princess Elizabeth during her time in Malta in the 1950’s.

Day One

Your chauffeur will collect you and your guest from your chosen UK address and take you to Heathrow Airport. On arrival in Malta, you will be given VIP status to clear customs whereupon your private chauffeur-driven Mercedes will be waiting to take you to the Relais and Chateaux Xara Palace Hotel in Mdina.
A fabulous late 17th century property uniquely located within the historic, noble city of Mdina, the old capital city of Malta. The hotel building forms part of the medieval bastions that surround the fortified City. The hotel has been meticulously restored to its previous charming ambience and has also been up-graded and brought up to-date in every way promising to be the finest and most unique as well as elegant establishment on the Maltese Islands.
The Xara Palace has become the only Maltese hotel within the Luxury Alliance, which groups together the members of Relais & Châteaux and The Leading Hotels of the World. The two organisations encompass the majority of the world’s best and most luxurious hotels and restaurants.

Our esteemed clientele will be pampered with every comfort, convenience and luxury while the hotel staff will honour their commitment not only to meet their guests’ expectations but also to exceed them in every possible way.

As a guest you will have the privilege of staying in one of seventeen individually designed rooms and suites imbued with unique features and decorated with period pieces as well as original paintings by renowned Maltese and International artists.

After settling into your suite on the edge of the historic bastions with extensive views of Malta, your personal guide will meet you in the hotel Lobby, where you will set out for a Leisurely Tour of this Medieval city. You guide will take you through the history of Mdina, as you walk past the numerous Baroque and Norman Palaces that line the narrow streets.

Your evening tour will end with an exclusive after hours visit to Palazzo Falson – a typical two-storey medieval palace fashioned on Sicilian examples of its period. This imposing Palazzo, built by the Sicilian, Spanish and local nobility in Mdina, is a unique and extraordinary treasure-trove.
Palazzo Falson houses forty-five extraordinary collections which include paintings, silver, furniture, jewellery, Oriental rugs and armoury, as well as a remarkable library containing over 4,500 books, and some highly valuable manuscripts.
The wealth of the collections held at the palazzo offer the visitor the enriching experience of a museum visit, but within the intimate setting of a private noble house.

Dinner will be served at the award winning de Mondion restaurant located on the top floor of your hotel, commanding spectacular panoramic views. As one of Malta’s leading gastronomic treasures, it promises to offer you the best of typical Modern French and Mediterranean cuisine.

Day Two

On your second day, your chauffer will collect you from your hotel and take you down to the Valletta Waterfront, where you will be greeted by your representative and escorted to the Harbour Air terminal. Taking off from the spectacular Grand Harbour this 30 minute tour gives you the chance to enjoy the beautiful archipelago from 1000 feet above ground and 500 feet over water! An experience you are sure to remember.

After landing back at the Grand Harbour, your rep will take you for a short walk down the road to customs house where you will meet Stuart with his Daghjsa (traditional Maltese Rowing Boat). You will enjoy a guided tour of the Grand Harbour on the ‘St. Angelo’. This boat, built between 1950-52, was commissioned for use with the Royal Navy exclusively to ferry the then Princess Elizabeth, now Queen of England, from her Navy vessel to Fort St. Angelo (then the British Navy headquarters for the Mediterranean).

After your tour of the Grand Harbour your personal guide will accompany you by Karozzin, a typical Maltese Horse Drawn Carriage, up to the city of Valletta. The entire capital city is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This magnificent fortified gem contains numerous buildings of historic importance, and this half day in the city will enable you to visit some of the highlights that this bustling Baroque city has to offer.

Your first stop will be at Ambrosia for lunch. Old mirrors hang from the ceiling with little lights strung around them. The warm coloured walls and the French chairs make this place unique. It is small and intimate; and the friendly chef usually comes out to see that everything is just right! This is a bistro-style restaurant with a slow food approach. It serves fine Maltese, Italian and Spanish food.

After lunch you will head to St John’s Co-Cathedral, with its impressive display of Baroque treasures, and to the Cathedral Oratory, home to the largest single work by Caravaggio, and his only signed work.

Your next stop will be the Palace of the Grand Master and Museum of the Knights of Malta, which ranks among the most valuable historic monuments of European culture.
After the Palace, we will take a short stroll down to the Malta Experience, a 45 minute audio visual show that will take you through the history of the Maltese Islands.
At around 17:00hrs you will be transferred back to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day Three

This day will be spent out at sea on a 47 foot Bavaria sailing yacht (weather permitting). Your captain will explain the basics in sailing and handling a yacht of this size, whilst having the opportunity to take the wheel yourselves as you cruise along the coast of Malta and Gozo.

Your chauffeur will collect you from your hotel at 08:15 and take you down to the Marina where you will set sail at 09:00 returning back to berth at 17:00. Lunch will be served on board by the captain.

Tonight you will be treated to an excellent Mediterranean dinner at the acclaimed Essence Restaurant. The combination of superlative seafood in a sundowner setting is a perfect match. Essence has set itself new goals with a focus on fish and seafood cuisine; there are, after all, few more appropriate venues in which to savour seafood at its best than overlooking a wide sweep of bay and open sea.
